Earlier this year, Viking announced plans for a new line of vacations, Viking Ocean Cruises. Expanding on Viking’s classic line of river cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises will allow travelers to take tours of Europe’s biggest and most famous seas, offering the same level of service and exclusive events and sights that have become a staple of the Viking name. The first planned expeditions are set to launch in May 2015, with voyages from Scandinavia through the Baltic Sea, as well as cruises that cover both the Eastern and Western Mediterranean.

Viking is already offering deals for the 2015 maiden voyages of the Viking Ocean Cruises line:

  • The Viking Homelands cruise is a 15-day tour of northern Europe and Scandinavia. The tour begins with an overnight stay in Stockholm, has additional overnight stays in St. Petersburg, Copenhagen, and Bergen, as well as many other calls in cities throughout Scandinavia.

Expanding the River Cruise Line

The popularity of river cruises and the quality of service Viking offers has allowed them to expand their line of ships. Earlier this year, Viking River Cruises set a world record with the most new cruise ships christened in a single day. On March 20, Viking inaugurated ten new vessels into its river cruise line. All of these ships are of the Viking Longship class, which were named Best New River Ships of 2012 by the editors of Cruise Critic magazine. With these new ships, Viking will be able to expand its cruise packages to offer more destinations and better deals.

Viking has also announced plans to top this expansion in 2014. The company has announced plans to add 12 to 14 more Viking Longship class cruise vessels next year, with the goal of being able to break their one-day christening record. River cruises are gaining in popularity right now, and Viking’s success at providing high-quality cruise options at an affordable price has made them one of the most popular companies for cruise bookings.

Viking’s fleet expansion has allowed them to announce some new itineraries for 2014, as well:

  • Viking will begin offering a 16-day cruise package titled Memories of Mandalay, which will primarily go through Myanmar (Burma) while also having stops in Thailand. The cruise will begin in Bangkok, with a guided itinerary through the city’s famous landmarks, before continuing to historic Yangon (formerly Rangoon), where, among other sites, vacationers will be able to see the Shwedagon Pagoda (perhaps more commonly known as the Golden Pagoda), the most famous and sacred Buddhist pagoda in all of Myanmar. After this, the cruise will travel down the Irrawaddy river, where vacationers will be able to both view historic landmarks and visit villages to see what everyday life is like for the Burmese. The cruise then continues to historic Mandalay, where the tour will visit the Mahamuni Pagoda, and vacationers will be able to take home local craftworks as souvenirs. The cruise then finally returns to Bangkok, where travelers can explore the city on their last nights on vacation.

  • Viking has also announced a new cruise itinerary in France. The Viking Forseti, one of Viking’s newest vessels in the Viking Longship class, will take passengers on a cruise through wine country. The Châteaux, Rivers & Wine cruise will take vacationers on three separate rivers in France, going through wine country with stops in Bordeaux, Pauillac, Blaye, St. Emilion, and Cadillac. Each stop on the eight-day journey will feature a location famous for one of France’s many particular notable wines. This shorter cruise is a great way to take an affordable vacation, and it’s an especially enjoyable way for wine lovers to sample some of the most historically famous vintages of old Europe.

  1. We talk about seeing Normandy and going on a river cruise maybe through Germany or another country, but not France. I don’t know if this could be arranged and whether it would be too busy for us. We are four seniors and walking is a bit difficult for two of us.
