Vietnam is country with a rich history. At the beginning of my cruise on the Mekong river with AmaWaterways, I went to the Independence Palace, which serves as one of the many museums that Saigon has to offer. It’s known as Saigon by its people who live there but Ho Chi Minh City by its government.
On the outside of the museum there were relics of old war planes, tanks and large bombs that were used in the war. That was extremely fascinating for me seeing these in real life as opposed to on television or in a movie theater.

Vietnam and Cambodia have been on my bucket list for a while therefore last December I decided to take the “Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong River” cruise with my husband. We took two cruises with Avalon few years ago and we loved them so much that we decided to book another one. This land / river package starts in Ho Chi Minh and ends in Siem Reap with 7 days aboard the Avalon Siem Reap; however, we have also added Hanoi and Ha Long Bay extension.

We arrived at Saigon’s Ho Chi Minh airport in Vietnam just after 10:00pm. We applied for e-visas several weeks prior to departure, so upon arrival, the process to receive our Vietnam tourist visa stamp took less than 10 minutes. After sailing effortlessly through immigration, we collected our luggage, met our Avalon representative in the baggage area, and we were enroute to our hotel within what seemed like only 45 minutes of landing.
The Mekong River is one of the truly grand natural features of southeast Asia, a waterway that connects cities, countries, and cultures, and thousands of years ago made civilization possible along its banks. The River starts in Tibet, runs through China, then functions as the Laos-Thailand border, before passing through Cambodia, then Vietnam, before finally emptying into the sea.
A tour along the Mekong is a great way to see many vibrant cultures, which have existed for thousands of years, as well as a wide variety of nature scenes – for the Mekong is one of the most biodiverse areas of the entire world. Avalon Waterways offers cruises along the Mekong, learn more about these cruises and what you can expect to see.
