Greece has been one of my bucket list destinations for a very long time. My trip to Greece on the Greek Island Hopper with Trafalgar tour, started with our arrival in Athens, Greece. There we stayed in the Radisson Blu Park hotel for three nights. I flew in a day early to get used to the time change and explore more of the city. The weather was so hot but nothing kept us from going out. Some tips you should know before traveling to Greece is to bring a hat, sunblock, light clothes, comfortable shoes, and water bottles. Our hotel was a 30-minute walk to the Athens Plaka shopping center, and approximately 20 minutes to the flea market, but you could use a taxi if you’d like.

The next day in our Greek Island Hopper tour, we went to visit the National Archaeological Museum, one of the most important museums in the world, dedicated to ancient Greek art, culture, and artistic values. In the evening, we had a welcome reception with our tour director, Susanna Paakko, in the restaurant of the hotel. She gave us general safety tips, such as how to look out for pickpockets, transportation (metro bus, taxi), and the itinerary with optional excursions for the trip.

The following day we explored the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Erechtheum, the Athena, and the Olympia Stadium with a local guide, Antonio. He was very knowledgeable, informative, and enthusiastic, which made the ancient Greek history come to life.

The next early morning, we headed out on the high-speed ferry to the most famous island; a whitewashed paradise in the heart of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea named Mykonos.

The first day, we checked out the town, Chora, and wandered along the narrow streets of the old town surrounded by many unique boutique shops and Little Venice, where houses and cafes are built directly at water level.

From there, we admired the views of the famous windmills, where the grain used to be milled for bread flour.

For our next optional excursion, we took a short boat ride to see the archaeological ruins on the nearby island of Delos.

It was a sacred sanctuary and birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. Afterward, we spent time and relaxed on Platos Gialos beach near our hotel, and enjoyed local food for the rest of the evening.

Our last stop on the high-speed boat was just off another nearby island’s Iconic capital city, a vision of pristine whitewashed buildings. We explored Santorini Island, walked around the streets of bustling Fira, and discovered the delightful restaurants and nightlife.

We also took an optional excursion to a local winery. It was very delicious and educational. Afterward, we went to the village of Oia, the famous sunset view in town with the blue Dome church. The town has whitewashed houses carved into the rugged clifftops and overlooks a vast caldera filled with the cool blue water of the Aegean Sea.

Next, we visited the prehistoric Akrotiri. It is a Bronze Age settlement destroyed by a huge eruption in the 17th century B.C., buried under the volcanic ash, preserving the whole city. It is often referred often as “Prehistoric Pompeii”. Afterward, we headed for the black sand beach of Perivolos, passing a picturesque village. We enjoyed our leisure time swimming and relaxing in the ocean.

The next morning, from Santorini, we took a short flight back to the capital, Athens – Greece. After being transferred to the hotel, we had some free time for last-minute souvenir shopping.

I can’t begin to describe the amazing time my family and I had. My son and I loved Greece, the islands were fabulous and the Greek Island Hopper tour gave us a good introduction about the history of the places and archaeological sites of the beautiful country.

The experience was wonderful. The contact at the airports, the transfers, the hotels, and the excursions were all wonderful! We recommend Trafalgar and Greek Island Hopper to anyone who wants to travel with friends or family.
